Warsaw Firemen Battle Tuesday Evening Blazes

Posted

Firefighters responded to a pair of fires about four blocks apart Tuesday night in Warsaw.

No one was injured in the fires, which started around 7:52 p.m. and 11:47 p.m., respectively.

The 7:52 p.m. fire occurred at 414 Columbia Street and caused extensive damage to the house.

"(The fire) was well involved when units arrived," said Warsaw Fire Chief Mike Rice, who added that the garage and first floor were heavily damaged by fire and smoke.

Fire crews had the blaze under control in about 35 minutes, but the house is considered a total loss.

The cause of the fire is undetermined due to the amount of damage to the residence.

Shortly after returning from fighting the Columbia Street fire, crews were called again to fight a blaze on West Street, about four blocks from the Columbia Street fire.

Rice said the West Street fire was contained to a utility room, but the entire home had heavy smoke damage.

Firefighters controlled the blaze in about 10 minutes, and it remains under investigation.

According to Rice, both houses were under construction and unoccupied when the blazes started.

The Winona Lake and Atwood fire departments assisted the Warsaw Fire Department in battling the blazes.

Both fires remain under investigation and no estimated damage was available for either house.
