Warsaw Family Helps Complete Firework Record At Convention

Robert and Connie Schlag of Warsaw and their two grandsons can now say they know what it takes to set a world record for igniting fireworks.

The Schlags and their grandsons, Devin and Andrew Knisely attended the Pyrotechnics Guild International convention at Wisconsin International Raceway in Buchanan, Wis., with 4,000 other participants.

The week-long firework convention was held Aug. 6-12.

A world record was set when a string of 10.5 million firecrackers, called a Super String, within a record 800,000 firecrackers was ignited in five seconds.

The Schlags and their grandsons worked with 100 other Pyrotechnics Guild International members for two days to assemble the string of 10.5 million fireworks for a grand finale show held Aug. 11.

The previous world record was 9.2 million firecrackers being ignited.

The 30,000 pounds of firecrackers came in 26,000 boxes of 20,000 rolls.

The Schlags worked with other Pyrotechnic Guild International members and rolled out the fireworks, hung them over wires and stacked them to prepare for the show.

"When spectators smell the smoke during the final show, they're hooked on the fireworks and the love for them becomes in their blood," Robert said.

It was the Schlag's sixth year participating in the convention that is held in different states in August.

The couple and their grandsons attended the convention last year in Mason City, Iowa.

They also have gone to West Fargo, N.D., and Gillette, Wyo., in previous years for the convention.

The convention includes firework safety classes. A junior pyrotech show also is held for those 18-years-old and younger.

Those who attended the convention could purchase fireworks and set them off after the two shows that took place each night throughout the week.

Connie said she enjoyed meeting other Pyrotechnics Guild International members and spending time with her husband and grandsons.

"I loved being part of making the world record happen," Connie said.

Connie's grandsons also enjoyed the experience.

Andrew, 15, said he enjoyed preparing the fireworks for the show.

"It was hard work getting the fireworks ready because they were heavy, but I am happy that I helped set a world record," he said.

Devin, 13, also enjoyed participating in the event.

"I will always remember the show and that I helped set a world record," Devin said.
