Warsaw Eyes Changes To Traffic Control Rules

Posted
Warsaw City Council reviewed four ordinance recommendations Monday that would amend the city's traffic control ordinance.

The commission approved at its Oct. 4 traffic meeting submitting the recommendations to the council for approval. Mayor Ernie Wiggins read the ordinance suggestions and said the council would need to have two readings for the ordinance to be changed. The ordinance changes recommended by the traffic commission include the speed limit on CR 300N, between Detroit Street and the hillcrest, located 350 feet west of Sheldon Drive, be set at 30 miles per hour. The commission recommended from the hillcrest west to the city limits that the speed limit be 45 miles per hour.

The traffic commission recently discussed school zone speed limits. Research found the current city code does not provide for any speed reduction in school zones.

The traffic commission recommends a provision in the city code be made to lower the speed limit by 10 miles per hour in school zones.

Another ordinance amendment the traffic commission requested is to allow two-hour parking along the west side of Washington Street between Center and Main streets.

The traffic commission approved allowing parking in the area and extending two-hour parking one block to the west on the south side of Center Street.

The last ordinance amendment the commission reviewed was to not allow parking on two of the three blocks of Eagle Street between Union and Logan streets.

Bill Rhoades said the street is not wide enough to allow for parking on either side of the streets. The commission approved the entire three blocks not allow for parking on either side of the street.

The council reviewed an e-mail to the city from Patti Miner, 510 Eagle St., stating her concern with the commission requesting to eliminate parking on the street.

Warsaw Traffic Safety commissioner and councilman George Clemens recommended the council table the discussion until its November meeting to allow the council to review the proposed ordinance changes.

Wiggins said the council will discuss the issue at its next meeting.

The council also:
