SYRACUSE - Warsaw capped off an undefeated boys swimming regular season by running away with the sectional championship Saturday.
The Tigers, who ended the season 14-0, scored 298 points in outdistancing Wawasee (234 points) and Bremen (232). Manchester ended fourth with 168 and Valley took sixth with 105.
"I was really happy," Warsaw head coach Chris LaLonde said. "It was a lot of fun. Everybody knew it was going to have to be a team effort to get first place."
Despite the victory, this meet went much like the Northern Lakes Conference meet for Warsaw. The Tigers won that without a first-place finish and had just one win in the sectional. That came in the final event, the 400 freestyle relay. Seniors Mike McCammon, Nick Leininger and Justin VanLaeken, along with sophomore Justin Lowrance, swam a time of 3:24.48 to advance to the state meet.
Two Tiger divers finished in the top four to move on to the regional event. Andrew Scholl finished second and Kevin Cowan fourth for Warsaw.
For Wawasee, sophomore Adam Brown moved on to the state meet in two events. He took first in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:02.94. He also set a new school record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.68 to beat Warsaw's John Sincroft and Bremen's Jeff Fox by more than two seconds.
"We were pretty pleased," Wawasee head coach Roger Karns said. "Warsaw is a really deep team and they were going to be hard to beat, but I thought our boys swam real well. This was probably our best meet."
For Manchester, Rod Smith won the 100 backstroke with a time of :55.39 and beat out teammate Charlie Summerland by two seconds to move on to the state meet.
In diving, the Squires' Reed Christiansen finished first with a score of 391.95. He will advance to the regional round.
Valley set a new school record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:45.28 to advance to the state meet. Guilherme Grava, Charlie Wise, Jason Paris and Matt Haussmann swam on the winning team.
Paris also won an individual event for the Vikings, the 100 butterfly. His winning time of :55.15 bettered Bremen's Michael Stoller by 1.7 seconds.
All first place finishers will compete in the state meet on Friday at Indianapolis. Those in the top 16 on the first day of competition will compete in the finals on Saturday.
