Warsaw Dominates H. North 3-0

Posted

If it were a football game, Warsaw's varsity girls soccer team dominated the game of field position Tuesday against visiting Huntington North.

If it were a baseball game, Huntington North was dealt a no-hitter.

In the game of soccer it may be the simplest of theories - to score, one must take a shot at the goal.

Huntington North didn't do that last night.

In a 3-0 win Tuesday, Warsaw outshot the Vikings 31-0.

"Athletically, we were a better team than they were," sixth-year Tiger coach Brent Wildman said. "We were faster than they were, but then we began to slow down and play at their level rather than ours. We should have been able to use this as a tremendous practice game."

The win improves Warsaw's overall record to 6-2-3. Huntington North falls to 5-6 on the season.

Junior Chelsea Boyd put the Tigers on the board - a scoreboard that didn't work -Êearly in the first half off an assist from sophomore Claire Beckett.

Beckett finished the game with two assists as she assisted junior Kari Wildman in the second half.

The Tigers took 21 shots in the first half and came away with a 1-0 lead at the break. Wildman said his team averages 12 shots per game.

Warsaw had chances to light the scoreboard up even more, but kicks went over or wide of the goal. "The girls were frustrated with themselves that they didn't execute," Wildman said.

The Tigers scored their final goal of the game in the second half when Boyd cornered an assist to freshman Ashley Kitchens, who headed the ball into the net.

"We practiced for an hour on corner kicks and headers," Wildman said. "Tonight we scored our first goal with a corner kick on a header."

Warsaw managed 10 shots in the second half. Wildman said this was due to Huntington's players bunching up.

"Their team bunched up, put pressure on the goal," Wildman said. "When you have lopsided shots on goal, it's like shooting through trees. It's called packing the goal. As a matter of fact, we didn't score when it was packed."

Warsaw will be in action again Thursday when it hosts Kokomo.
