Almost everyone at Saturday's game between Warsaw and Goshen expected the Tigers to come out on top, and the only question was by how much.
In the end Warsaw won the game by 37 points in a 62-25 rout of the Northern Lakes Conference foe Redskins.
The first quarter was all Steve Siebenmorgen.
Literally.
Siebenmorgen scored all 10 Warsaw points as the Tigers outscored the Redskins 10-4.
Siebenmorgen went on to score the first two points in the second quarter as well. After the second quarter, the Tigers had built a 23-13 lead.
"I think our team depth wore them down," said Warsaw coach Al Rhodes.
While Siebenmorgen was the story of the first half, Zach Nelson was the star of the second half. After scoring just three points on a 1-of-3 shooting performance in the first two quarters of play, Nelson exploded for 11 of Warsaw's 16 points in the third frame.
In the third quarter alone, Nelson was 4 for 4 from the field and 3 of 3 from the charity stripe.
Nelson continued to dominate the Redskins in the fourth quarter as he netted seven points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field and 1 of 2 free throws.
Nelson finished the game with 21 points. He netted eight shots on 11 attempts from the field and 5 of 6 free throws. He also pulled down four rebounds in the winning effort.
Siebenmorgen added 16 points and three rebounds and a steal for the Tigers.
"We did an excellent job of passing the ball effectively and getting it inside," said Rhodes. "Zach (Nelson) had 21 and (Steve) Siebenmorgen had 16 because we were getting the ball to them.
"Defensively, the guys followed the scouting report well. Last night number 40 (Brandon Hughes) had 25 points, and tonight Ross Kesler held him to just six."
Although Kesler scored just two points, he led Warsaw in both rebounding and assists. He pulled down seven rebounds, dished out four assists, and grabbed one steal for the Tigers.
"Ross led the team in rebounds and steals and he did a good job guarding one of thier hottest players," said Rhodes. "He put in a tremendous all-around effort."
Warsaw is now 8-2 overall and 3-0 in NLC play. The Tigers face NorthWood, the only other undefeated NLC team, Friday in Nappanee.
"This was a solid team effort," said Rhodes. "After NorthWood beat Northridge Friday, this sets up a huge matchup for us Friday. We will travel to NorthWood and play an important game in the conference race. It should be a great game."
