Warsaw Crushes NorthWood

The Warsaw Tigers girls soccer team stayed undefeated with a 9-0 victory over NorthWood on Thursday.

Krista Coppes had two goals and two assists, while Rachel Buhrt and Mandy Buggeman added two more goals each. Jodi Wildman, Bobbi Wildman and Tanya Koser each scored a goal for the Tigers.

Warsaw (3-0-1) will be at Culver Community on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Elkhart Central 3, Warsaw 0

At Elkhart, Warsaw's offense was unable to get on track, and the defense bowed to the pressure of Elkhart Central on Thursday.

Warsaw got only three shots on goal to Elkhart Central's 19.

Elkhart Central defeated Warsaw 2-1 in the junior varsity game. Gabe Koser scored Warsaw's lone goal.

The Tigers, 0-2, play their first home game at the CCAC when they play South Bend Riley at 5 p.m.

Warsaw 189, NorthWood 203, Concord 213

At Rozella Ford, Warsaw's girls golf team improved to 10-1 with wins over NorthWood and Concord in a Thursday Northern Lakes Conference match.

The Tigers were balanced, as their top four golfers were between 44 and 53. Brooke Westover fired a 44 to take co-medalist honors with NorthWood's Michelle Taylor. The 189 was one stroke off Warsaw's season-best score. The Tigers shot a 188 against Tippecanoe Valley last Thursday.

Ashley Cooper and Kerri Wrobel added 46s for Warsaw.

Warsaw upped its record to 4-0 in the NLC. NorthWood fell to 7-2 overall and 2-2 in the NLC, and Concord dropped to 6-4 overall and 0-2 in the NLC.

Warsaw swept the junior varsity match. The Tigers (6-4) beat NorthWood 166-191 and Concord 109-132. Lara Reed's 52 led Warsaw. Kristen Stichter led NorthWood with a 61.

First place in the NLC is on the line when Warsaw locks up with Goshen at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

At Maxwelton Golf Club, Wawasee's Kari Wortinger shot eight strokes better than anyone else, but Wawasee still lost on Thursday.

Wortinger's 48 gave her medalist honors. After her, Wawasee's best score was Julia Wolfe's 60.

Kim Humphrey paced Plymouth with a 56.

Wawasee, 2-11, meets Concord and Northridge in a 4:30 p.m. Tuesday match at Black Squirrel Golf Course in Goshen.

At Mishawaka, Warsaw's boys tennis team fell to 1-1 with a Thursday loss to Marian.

Warsaw No. 2 singles player Ryan Van Puffelen and the No. 2 doubles team of Eric Grossnickle and Matt Krizmanich picked up the Tigers' two wins.

Warsaw won the junior varsity match 4-1. Pete Hake and David Honneffer won singles matches. Matt Kloser and Eric Keller won the No. 1 doubles match, while Mark Howard and Ryan Dill won the No. 2 doubles match.

Warsaw hosts Fort Wayne Northrop at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

At Ligonier, Wawasee's boys tennis team won its first match of the 1997 season on Thursday.

Steve Ummel picked up Wawasee's only singles win. Wawasee's No. 1 doubles team of Quyen Tran and Jared Mahnensmith and the No. 2 doubles team of Farhan Haq and Shane Beer also won.

West Noble won the junior varsity match 3-2. Kyle Hilgenberg and Adam Shock won singles matches for the Warriors.

Wawasee, 1-0, has a 4:30 p.m. Tuesday match at Whitko.

Warsaw 15-5, 15-2

At Fort Wayne, Snider's volleyball team made it a clean sweep over Warsaw on Thursday. Snider won the varsity, junior varsity and freshman matches against the Tigers.

Nancy Mason led Warsaw with three kills, while Alyssa Raphael and Shanna Smith added two each. Smith led with three digs, and Karla Bailey led with five assists. Warsaw's varsity team is 2-1.

Warsaw's junior varsity team dropped to 2-1 with a 14-16, 15-8, 15-7 loss. Ryann Jones was 13-for-13 serving with five aces. Megan Burns delivered seven kills, and Rachael Conley contributed eight blocks.

Warsaw's freshman volleyball team lost 15-13, 15-5. Chelsey Hartle served six points, including two aces. Kristin Degeeter had two kills.

Warsaw's varsity team competes in the Mishawaka Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Bethany Christian Def. Wawasee 16-14, 8-15, 15-3

At Syracuse, Wawasee's volleyball team dropped to 2-3 with a Thursday loss to Bethany Christian.

Lydia Carpenter led Wawasee with 18 kills, and Kara Mathew added 12. Jennifer Mason led with 28 assists, and Angie Beer led with eight digs.

Wawasee won the junior varsity match 15-1, 6-15, 15-4 to improve to 3-2. Gennie Brissette had seven kills for the Warriors.

Wawasee competes in the Westview Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Tippecanoe Valley Def.

Wabash 3-15, 15-8, 15-8

At Mentone, Tippecanoe Valley's volleyball team won its first match of the season, beating Wabash on Thursday.

Andria Parker served eight points and had seven kills for Valley. Brandy Manns had seven blocks, five kills and five service points. Rhonda Doud had 18 assists, and Brandi Fisher had four kills. Carissa Parker served eight points, and Brooke Fisher contributed three blocks.

"After our loss to Wawasee, we completely changed our offensive and defensive coverage," Valley coach Jon Parker said. "We struggled with that change, but now it's made the team stronger."

Valley's junior varsity team improved to 4-2 with a 15-11, 15-8 win.

Triton 14-16, 15-9, 15-8

At Walkerton, Triton's volleyball team played and lost its first Northern State Conference match on Thursday.

Triton went 6-1 with a share of the NSC title in 1996.

Megan Sarber had seven kills for Triton, and Jessica Kintzel added six. Heather Barron led with 20 assists. Chris Scott was 12-for-12 serving with two aces, and Kelli Hackett was 10-for-11 serving with three aces.

Triton's junior varsity team beat John Glenn 15-8, 15-8. Emily Yankovich had five kills for the Trojans. Brandie Ganshorn served 13 points, and Melissa Claxon served 11. Triton's junior varsity team is 2-1.

Triton, 1-2, competes with Caston, Manchester and Tippecanoe Valley in a 9 a.m. Saturday tourney at Manchester High School.

Fort Wayne Christian Def. LCA 15-8, 15-2

Lakeland Christian Academy's volleyball team fell to 0-2 with a Thursday loss to Fort Wayne Christian. Kelly Custer had two blocks for LCA, and Sarah Hauper served four points.

LCA hosts Elkhart on Tuesday.

Cross-Country

Rochester Sweeps Whitko

At Rochester, Whitko's cross-country teams lost a Thursday meet with the Zebras. The boys lost 29-28, while the girls lost 45-15.

Whitko's Tylen Hull and Jered Deckena placed first and second respectively with times of 18:51 and 18:53.

No Whitko girls cracked the top six. Rachel Lehman had Whitko's best finish, placing seventh with a time of 23:00.

Both Whitko teams compete in a 4:30 p.m. Tuesday meet at Huntington North.
