Warsaw Couple Critical After Crash

Posted
A Warsaw couple were critically injured Friday evening after their small SUV was struck by a pickup working to cross over U.S. 30.
Police and medics were called just after 6:30 p.m. to the intersection of U.S. 30 and County Road 500 West. There, Kosciusko County Sheriff's deputies and emergency personnel found a small SUV on its side, its driver trapped inside, and a pickup damaged nearby, the sheriff’s department said.
The trapped driver – 47-year-old Charlene A. Frye, of Clark Street, Warsaw – was cut from the SUV and eventually airlifted to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. She was last listed in critical condition, suffering from a head injury, according to the sheriff’s department.
Her husband and passenger – Leon Watkins Frye, 51, also of Clark Street, Warsaw – was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital with unspecified internal injuries, but later himself airlifted to Parkview Hospital in critical condition, police said.
Investigators said they believe that a red Ford F-250 pickup driven by Curtis D. Dye, 51, C.R. 500W, Warsaw, was northbound on 500 West when Dye stopped at the intersection of U.S. 30, then proceeded through. He told police that he did not see the Frye’s westbound small SUV, the sheriff’s department said.
The pickup hit the Sportage on its driver’s side, sending it into a rollover, the sheriff’s department said.
Dye was taken with minor injuries to Kosciusko Community Hospital, where he was treated and released, according to police.
U.S. 30’s westbound lanes were closed for two hours as deputies, Warsaw and Atwood fire crews and the Indiana State Police worked and cleaned the scene.
State mandated blood draws were taken from both drivers. Those results are pending, and investigators said the crash case remains live.
