Warsaw Council Comments On Zimmer Expansion

Posted

Last week's business with Zimmer Inc. was still fresh on the minds of Warsaw City Council members Monday, who discussed the recently announced expansion and the company's cooperation with local and state governments.

"We're very fortunate to have such a dynamic company in our community," councilman Joe Thallemer said. "It makes you feel good seeing this come together, and I'm excited to see the town and business prosper together."

The councilmen, who approved a 10-year tax abatement for Zimmer prior to the expansion announcement, discussed the positive effects the city will experience from the Zimmer addition, mainly in the job sector.

"We've always been fortunate to have such strong growth in Warsaw," councilman Jerry Patterson said. "We've much to be grateful for in this community."

In other issues, members approved an ordinance allowing an additional appropriation for funding of city medical insurance benefits. The request, totaling $100,000, will be sent for approval to the Department of Local Government Finance.

Members also approved transfer requests from the street department, which now will relocate funds to compensate for unemployment costs and consulting services through Quality Environmental Professionals Inc.

"I feel we've had more unemployment costs this year than ever before," Lacy Francis, street department superintendent, said.

Unemployment was also the reason for a transfer request from the parks department, which was approved during the meeting. Other transfer requests involved unexpected costs related to the construction of the Mantis Skate Park, a new department phone system, and general operating supplies.

Present council members were Patterson, Thallemer, Jeff Grose, Bob Morrison, Bill Rhoades and Charlie Smith. Mayor Ernie Wiggins and George Clemens were absent for the meeting.
