Indiana Rep. Tim Roemer has announced the Warsaw Police Department will receive a $19,545 local law enforcement block grant recently approved by Congress.
"The local block grant program provides needed funds to promote crime prevention and law enforcement at the local level," Roemer said. "Local communities know best how to fight crime and promote for safer neighborhoods. This program puts the funding in their hands."
Roemer added that the grants are distributed using a formula based on violent crime data the FBI has collected from states and local districts covering the last three years.
The Warsaw Police Department will continue the on-going computerization of its patrol cars and interfacing with the computer system already in place, according to Warsaw Police Chief Craig Allebach.
"We have used this grant in the past as a match for other, larger grants," he said. "But we won't be using it for that this year."
According to Allebach, the grant this year will be used to continue the hardware and software updates and to bring more patrol cars on-line with the system already in place.
