Classes for Warsaw Community School Corp. students start in about three weeks. At the school board meeting Monday night, board member Randy Polston reminded the public about late registration dates. Parents new to the corporation or with kindergarten students should visit their neighborhood school to register their children for the 2013-14 school year. Registration times are 2 to 6 p.m. July 31; 4 to 8 p.m. Aug. 1; and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 2. These dates are for late registration only. Teacher assignments may not be completed, especially at the elementary level. Classrooms may not be available for visiting and teachers will not be present. For those students enrolling in a middle school or the high school, they may find classes and their lockers during the times mentioned above. For returning families to the corporation, log into the student information database, PowerSchool (powerschool.warsaw.k12.in.us/public) to register students. For questions about registration, call 574-371-5098, or the neighborhood school now. In his superintendent’s report, Dr. Craig Hintz said he looked forward to welcoming all staff back Aug. 12, beginning at 8:30 a.m., at the Performing Arts Center. During that morning’s program, the 2013-2014 Teacher of the Year, Support Staff Person of the Year and the Special Services Person of the Year will be recognized. The program will conclude by 10:30 a.m. Hintz also thanked the more than 50 WCS educators who participated in the Math Science Partnership professional development activity the past two weeks, along with WCS’s partners from Ball State and Manchester universities. “(Edgewood Middle School Principal) JoElla Smyth indicated she learned more math and science and more teaching of math and science than she did at any time in her life,” Hintz said. This is year one of the MSP grant WCS received from the state. On July 29 and 30, WCS will host about 400 educators from more than 35 school corporations for the First Annual eLearning Conference, Hintz stated. Nationally known keynoters will present at 9 a.m. each day. He thanked those who helped organize it, including Nancy Rooker, Susan Armacost and Brad Hagg. Hintz said WCS is anxious to welcome more than 7,000 students through its doors on the first day of school, Aug. 13. He said it would be wonderful if WCS had around 7,300 students. At the end of the 2012-13 school year, he said WCS had about 7,184 students. His last remark was that WCS’s leadership theme this year is “Excelling Today, Dreaming for Tomorrow.” The school board also: • Approved the 2013-14 school year Title I application. • Approved the changes to the facility rental policies as discussed at the July 16 public work session. • Approved the Warsaw Community High School textbook price revision and the July 2013 personnel report. • Heard the 2014 budget public hearing will be at noon Sept. 6 instead of 4 p.m. • Heard from Hintz that the two preschool classes at Claypool and the one preschool class at Leesburg are full. He also said they feel good about what the kindergarten enrollment will be this upcoming school year. “I’m really encouraged we will have more kindergarten students this year than this time last year,” Hintz indicated.
