Posted

More than 4,000 people turned out at Center Lake Park Sunday for the fifth annual Warsaw Cinco de Mayo Festival.

"We had the biggest turnout we've ever had for a Cinco de Mayo Festival ever," said Andy McCleary, Warsaw City Parks Department, today.

The festival began with a church service at 10 a.m. and concluded at 9:30 p.m.

Mel Coplen won the homemade salsa contest and received $50 in cash. The queen contest winner was Alicia Henderson, who received $200 in cash as well as scholarship money.

One of the many children's programs included pinatas.

A mariachi band and ballet performed as did several bands from East Chicago, Texas and other places from around the country.

Denise Beno was the recipient of the citizen's award. The award is presented to someone who has made a difference in the Hispanic culture. Beno founded the festival five years ago.
