Playing in weather that was more suitable for a football game in Chicago, Warsaw's varsity boys golf team won the Tiger Invitational Saturday in cold, windy and snowy conditions at Stonehenge Golf Club.
The 11-team invitational was scheduled to be an 18-hole tournament but was shortened to nine holes due to the snow.
Warsaw turned in a four-person score of 155, to win the team title.
Homestead finished second with a score of 162, followed by Lake Central (163), Marion (167), Culver Academy (169), Brownsburg (174), Shelbyville (181), South Bend Adams (183), Triton (185), Rochester (189) and Bremen (193).
"The team was real excited to start the season with a good win against some good teams," said fifth-year Warsaw coach Ben Barkey. "It's good to see their hard work pay off so early in the season and we're excited to get better as the season goes on. For the conditions, we played well enough to win. We had two new faces, Ben Harris and Corey Hensley, in the varsity lineup and they played well for their first time."
Barkey said the playing conditions were tough, but that this team had practiced in elements similar to that of Saturday's.
"The conditions were tough but we have practiced in similar conditions," said Barkey. "The only difference between practice and Saturday ws the snow was sticking to the ground. Once that happened the course became unplayable. Even though it was cold, windy and snowy we had fun and these guys will never forget this tournament because of the snow."
Tad Nieter led the Tigers with a 37, while Grant Slater added a 38. Ryan Marose and Ben Harris both shot 40, while Corey Hensley finished with a 44.
Homestead's Erich Johnston was the individual medalist with a 35, while Lake Central's Kyle Hackel turned in a 36. Nieter and Slater finished third and fourth, respectively, as individuals.
The Tigers are in action again Thursday when they host Fort Wayne Blackhawk and South Bend Clay.
