Just as baseball teams do in the fourth game of the World Series and basketball teams do in the fourth game of the NBA Playoffs, Warsaw's boys swim team may as well have had their brooms on hand Saturday when it hosted Northern Lakes Conference foe Goshen.
The Tigers swept the Redskins in the sense that they took first place in all 12 of the meet's events. Warsaw cruised to a 140-45 win that improved its overall season record to 4-0 and 2-0 in the NLC.
"We had some really good times," said Warsaw coach Chris LaLonde. "Goshen is down this year. Last year we couldn't have done that."
And in the five years that LaLonde has been at the helm of the Tigers, she doesn't remember ever winning all 12 events or winning by as much as 95 points.
"After the 200 medley relay when you go 1-3 (first, third) on somebody it's probably a pretty good indication," said LaLonde. "They don't have the quality they've had in the past. I swam our strongest lineup. I had to before Christmas break. I wanted them to stay focused on their events."
The 200 medley relay was the meet's first event.
To go with their 12 first-place finishes, the Tigers also placed either second or third in all of the events. Warsaw swept the Redskins in four of the events - diving, 100 butterfly, 500 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay.
"Adam Helfrich swam a real good 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly," said LaLonde. "Justin Lowrance and Kiel Beehler also swam good. They all swam good times."
Helfrich won both the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, and was also on the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams.
The girls meet was a bit closer, but the Tigers were on the short end of a 108-77 decision.
The loss drops Warsaw's girls overall season record to 5-2 and 1-1 in the NLC.
Katie Beehler accounted for both of Warsaw's first-place finishes, those coming in the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke.
Goshen held an 18-12 advantage after two events before Beehler's first-place finish in the 200 individual medley, coupled with a third-place finish by senior Meaghan Neill, brought the Tigers within two at 24-22.
With four events remaining the Tigers trailed 75-50, but a second-place finish by the team of Hillary Barlow, Claire Beckett, Neill and Aislinn Ummel, and a third-place finish by the team of Sarah Cook, Kady Clevenger, Margaret Tidmore and Meaghan McCammon in the 200 freestyle relay, pulled the Tigers within 17, 83-56.
After Beehler's victory in the backstroke, the meet's ninth event, Goshen held a 95-60 advantage. The Redskins swam to first and second-place finishes in the 100 breaststroke, and a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay to account for the 29-point victory.
