BOURBON – Warsaw was able to outscore Triton 17-6 in the second quarter, providing the bulk of the difference in a 43-24 win over the host Trojans Friday night. The Tigers went on an 11-2 run in the first three minutes of the second stanza, taking advantage of a Triton team that turned the ball over three times in six possessions, allowing Warsaw to use the fast break and get some easy shots. “We had a pretty good second quarter, and got going in transition as much as anything,” Warsaw head coach Doug Ogle said. “And Triton had a tough half shooting the ball. They missed some open shots that we were fortunate they missed. We got control of the game, and it wasn’t very exciting from there.” Neither team shot the ball very well, with Warsaw hitting just 39 percent from the field, and Triton an icy 28 percent. While defenses can take some of the credit, both coaches were less than pleased with the way the game went. Triton seemed disorganized on offense; perhaps in part because one of its scoring leaders, Masen Yeo, sat on the bench in street clothes after having an appendectomy earlier this week. “It was kind of an ugly game. It had all the flow of a dammed-up stream,” Ogle said. “Neither team played especially well. It obviously hurt them not to have Masen Yeo. We played OK, but nothing to write home about for either team.” Trojan head coach Jason Groves used the word “disappointed” to describe his team’s performance. “Warsaw’s a really good team, but I was disappointed in our lack of leadership (and) lack of communication. We weren’t hitting on any cylinders,” Groves said. “Don’t get me wrong, Warsaw’s a good team. But there was something not right with our team tonight. I’m really disappointed, to put it bluntly. I don’t know if it was a combination of playing Warsaw, losing Masen, the break, not playing for a while, I don’t know but I was definitely not pleased with what I saw.” Having a substantial lead enabled Ogle to substitute four and five players at a time, not unlike the University of Kentucky has frequently this season. Ogle said it wasn’t going to be a trend for the Tigers. “In this particular situation, since we didn’t practice very much this week, I just wanted to get our starters to rest for tomorrow night, and get our bench players some experience, spread out the minutes a little more than we normally would,” Ogle said. “Especially since we had a lead. We wouldn’t have been doing that if we hadn’t been comfortable. That’s probably a one time thing; I don’t see us doing that much anymore.” Triton’s Skyler Reichert and Warsaw’s Jake Mangas tied for game-high scoring honors with 10 points each, and were the only players in double figures. Kyle Mangas and Nick Sands tallied eight points each for Warsaw, and Joey Corder added seven for Triton. Both teams return to action tonight. Warsaw (8-1) hosts LaPorte and Triton (4-4) hosts Elkhart Central, with both games set to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
