Warsaw Boys Finish Dual Season Undefeated

The Warsaw boys track team clinched the regular season conference championship and an undefeated dual season by easily outdistancing Goshen and Plymouth Tuesday. Warsaw had 87 points, Goshen 41 and Plymouth 38.

The 6-0 Northern Lakes Conference record puts the Tigers in the drivers' seat for the conference championship when the NLC meet takes place May 14.

Jon Hill won the 100, 200 and 400 for the Tigers, and James Taylor, David Hoffert, Jose Esquivel, Greg Seiss and Scott Shepherd all won individual events. Warsaw also won the 400 relay and the 800 relay and placed second in the 3200 relay, losing to Goshen by .1 seconds.

Warsaw (8-0, 6-0) will host the Max Truex Invitational Friday, beginning at 6 p.m.

Manchester Runs Away With TRC

At South Whitley, Manchester's girls tennis team continued its dominance over the TRC by winning the conference championship. The Squires did not finish worse than third in any spot.

Kerri Metzger won at No. 2 singles for Manchester and Sarah Gilbert won at No. 3 singles. Manchester's No. 2 doubles team of Carmen DeFusco and Katrina Runkel also finished first.

Valley ended third. Bonnie Bickel and Carissa Parker won the No. 1 doubles tournament for the Vikings.

Manchester will be at Peru Thursday at 4:30 p.m. Valley will be at NorthWood Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Whitko will host Westview Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

At Nappanee, Warsaw's Krista Coppes picked up a three-set win to help the Tiger tennis team to a Tuesday Northern Lakes Conference win over NorthWood.

Coppes fell behind Anna Metz 5-7 but rebounded to win the match 6-3, 6-2.

Warsaw swept the doubles matches. Kim Paczkowski and Brooke Westover won the No. 1 doubles match, while Kara Kesler and Abbie Simmons won the No. 2 doubles match.

Warsaw won the junior varsity match 4-1. The junior varsity Tigers are 5-2.

Warsaw, 5-4, is at Concord at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. NorthWood is at Wawasee Thursday.

At South Bend, Manchester's baseball team slipped to 8-7 with a Tuesday loss to South Bend Riley.

Manchester's Chris Good had three hits, including a two-run homer, in the loss. Dusty Butterbaugh had three hits, and Derek Ring doubled and drove in three runs.

Manchester hosts an 11 a.m. Saturday doubleheader with DeKalb.

At Mentone, Valley trailed 13-5 after four innings, but scored six in the fifth and three in the seventh to win Tuesday.

Richie Swanson got the win for the Vikings, striking out four batters. Wes Backus, Aaron Cox and Drew Deardorff all doubled for Valley.
