SYRACUSE -ÊIt was a different day with the same result.
When the Warsaw baseball team hosted Wawasee two weeks ago, the Tigers defeated the Warriors by the 10-run rule in five innings.
Wednesday evening in Syracuse, Warsaw took on Wawasee in another Northern Lakes Conference matchup. And again, the Tigers defeated the Warriors in five innings, this time by a 12-1 score.
Warsaw scored two runs in the first inning to take the early lead. Sophomore Brandon LaFollette opened the game with a first-pitch double to start the Tiger offense.
A two-out error allowed Ryan DeGeeter to reach first and sent LaFollette across the plate. A single by William Knepper drove DeGeeter home and gave Warsaw a 2-0 advantage.
"I was proud of the way our kids got off the bus today," said Warsaw coach Will Shepherd. "They came out ready to play. They did not take this game lightly and we came here to win."
Wawasee answered in the bottom of the first by manufacturing a run of its own. Scott Beasley pounded a single down the third-base line and then stole second and third. A sacrifice fly by Brent Doty scored Beasley, and cut Warsaw's lead to one, 2-1.
However, an error-plagued second inning led to Wawasee's demise.
Tiger designated hitter Jacob Wilson was hit by a pitch to reach first and moved to second on a single by Chris Nycz. Then a sacrifice bunt by Jeff Polding moved the runners to second and third and a walk by LaFollette loaded the bases with just one out.
Zack Smith and John Milton reached base on consecutive Wawasee errors. The errors also allowed two more Tiger runs to score. A single by DeGeeter and a double by Knepper sent two more Warsaw runs across the plate, and a walk by Josh Stork loaded the bases again.
In his second trip to the plate in the second inning, Wilson walked to send another run across the plate.
In all, Warsaw scored 10 runs on five hits and four errors in the second inning. All 10 runs were unearned.
The rest of the game remained scoreless, and the contest ended after the fifth inning due to the 10-run rule.
LaFollette picked up the win on the mound for the Tigers. He pitched all five innings with two hits and one earned run. He struck out three Warriors.
"Brandon did a great job on the mound today," said Shepherd. "He improves every game out. He kept Wawasee off balance and he kept them guessing. He really pitched well today."
Dustin Sumpter pitched just 1-1/3 innings for the Warriors but was charged with the loss. He allowed five hits and walked one. In his time on the mound, nine runs scored, but none of them were earned.
The win improves Warsaw's record to 11-3 overall and 6-2 in NLC play. Wawasee falls to 5-9 on the season and 2-6 in the NLC.

Hepler Drives Winning Run, Tigers Down Wawasee In Extra Innings
By Dale Hubler, Times-Union Sports Writer
Put in a situation acted out in backyards summer after summer, Warsaw freshman Mallory Hepler played the part to perfection Wednesday afternoon.
With the game tied and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Hepler pounded out the game-winner, a triple to left that scored senior Ashley Wyatt and gave the Tigers a 2-1 extra-inning win over Northern Lakes Conference rival Wawasee.
"Mallory came up to the plate in the ninth and gave us a huge poke," Warsaw coach Kurt Burner said. "She came through with a big hit, that's exactly what we've been working on in practice. The kids stayed composed and didn't panic."
The win improves Warsaw to 8-6 overall and 7-1 in the NLC, while Wawasee falls to 7-7 and 2-5, losing to the Tigers for the second time this season.
While Warsaw did come through in the clutch, the Tigers let opportunity pass them by early in Wednesday's game.
Wyatt and Hepler reached first on errors to start the home half of the first, followed by a Brandi Bause single, but with the bases loaded Warrior hurler Haley Bird got through the inning without allowing a run.
The Tigers loaded the bases in the second as well, but again were denied any runs.
"I was very excited in the first inning," Burner said. "I thought we were gonna get a couple in. That's what we need to do so we can take some pressure off our pitching."
The Tigers scored the game's first run in the fourth inning when Wyatt, who went the distance on the mound, singled in Leah Kiphart, who herself reached base on a single.
The visiting Warriors threatened in the top of the fifth, as Angie Weybright led off with a single and then Kim Likens laced a one-out double two batters later.
Wyatt struck out Nicole Hymer and got Sara Weisser to fly out to get out of the inning.
"The kids did a good job keeping their composure," Burner said. "We really only had one inning where we gave up hits."
Wyatt picked up the win on the mound, topping the 100-plus pitch mark. She struck out six and walked one. At the plate Wyatt went 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI.
Bird picked up the pitching loss for Wawasee, walking one and striking out none in 8 2/3 innings of work.
Trailing 1-0 in the sixth, Wawasee's Kathy Likens scored, as the Tigers committed two errors in the inning.
Over the final three innings of the game, Wyatt faced just 10 batters.
Senior Holly McGriff and Bause each went 2 for 4 for Warsaw, while Tori Tosch, Hepler, Kiphart and Himes added one hit each.
Weybright had the only multi-hit game for the Warriors, going 2 for 4. Kim Likens, Kathy Likens and Sorenson all had one hit each.
Warsaw will be in action again Friday at NLC foe Goshen, while Wawasee is at Elkhart Memorial Friday.
