The Warsaw Municipal Airport has been named Airport of the Year by the Aviation Association of Indiana for its commitment to safety and education.

A plaque was presented to the city council during its meeting Monday night by Aviation Association of Indiana President Wayne Reynolds and Executive Director Bart Giesler.

"This award is a testament to our staff's hard work as well as the city council and mayor providing us with the resources needed to keep the airport running efficiently and successfully," said Airport Manager David Beall.

The award included a $1,000 grant to be given to an eligible community organization of the airport's choice.

The check was presented to Chapter 1109 of the Experimental Aircraft Association during Monday night's city council meeting.

The association offers a program that awards scholarships to students entering college who want to study aviation.

The program is a cooperative effort between the Aviation Association of Indiana, the Aircraft Owners and Pilot Association, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Indiana Department of Transportation Aeronautics Section and aviation industry sponsors.

The recognition was announced during the Aviation Association's annual conference Oct. 12 at the Abe Martin Lodge in Brown County State Park in Nashville.

Mayor Ernie Wiggins, Board of Aviation Commissioners President Jay Rigdon and Beall attended the conference and accepted the award.

In making the selection of the Warsaw Municipal Airport, the Aviation organizations highlighted the role the airport has played in expanding aviation education, its excellent safety record, community involvement, extensive marketing efforts and other economic development initiatives.
