Warsaw Advances Four To Semifinals Of NLC Tourney

Posted
DUNLAP – The first round of the Northern Lakes Conference boys tennis championships was held Wednesday at Concord, with Warsaw winning on four of the five courts.
When the semifinals resume today back at Concord, junior Evan Miller (No. 2 singles) and senior Alek Jansen (No. 3 singles) will look to advance to Saturday’s finals back at Concord, while the No. 1 doubles team of senior AJ Herendeen and sophomore Sam Rice, as well as the No. 2 doubles tandem of junior Will Petro and senior Connor Singrey will be doing the same.
Miller is the top seed at No. 2 singles, and defeated NorthWood’s Quinn Stillson to advance, while Petro and Singrey are also a No. 1 seed at No. 2 doubles, advancing to the semis with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Elkhart Memorial’s Stephen Tefft and Jon Bailey.
Jansen, as well as Herendeen and Rice, are both seeded third at the tournament, as Jansen defeated Concord’s Jack Hinkle 6-1, 6-3 and the doubles team downed Wawasee’s Isaac Rigdon and Dylan Hauser 6-1, 6-4.
Warsaw’s other competitor, Kyle Wettschurack lost to second-seeded Gabe Vervynckt at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-0.
Wettschurack will take on Wawasee’s Kyler Love, who lost to Memorial’s Mazin Hakim, today.
Having already gone 7-0 in NLC action during the season, if Warsaw wins the tournament it wins the conference outright, but a second place finish would leave the Tigers having to share the crown with Concord, who went 6-1 in the regular season.
After one round, Warsaw advanced four courts to the semifinals, while Concord advanced four as well.
The semifinals begin today at 4:30 p.m. with Saturday’s finals slated for a 9 a.m. start.
