Warriors Take Three Firsts

SYRACUSE - Wawasee placed first in three events in the boys swimming sectional preliminaries on Thursday, but the Warriors were outdistanced by Bremen. The Lions won five swims to pace the field. Valley and Manchester each placed first in one event. Warsaw, the favorite to win the sectional, also finished first in just one event.

Wawasee won the 200 medley relay, while Adam Brown won the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke for the Warriors. Brown's 100 breaststroke time of 1:02.43 was more than three seconds faster than Wawasee's Rusty VanLue, the second place finisher.

Warsaw won the last event of the evening, the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:26.68. The Tigers, though, took four second-place finishes and five third-place finishes to set them up for a strong team score.

Valley's Jason Paris won the 100 butterfly with a time of :55.68 to outdistance six other swims with times under a minute.

Manchester's Charlie Summerland won the 100 backstroke with a time of :57.94. Two other swimmers, Warsaw's Adam Helfrich and Manchester's Rod Smith, finished within one second of the leader.

In other notable finishes, Warsaw's and Valley's 200 medley relay team finished third and fourth, but are both right in the hunt. Warsaw's Nick Leininger and Jed Wandland finished second and third in the 200 freestyle.

Warsaw had Mike McCammon, Justin VanLaeken and Evan Mock finish third through fifth in the 200 individual medley. In that same event, Wawasee placed first, sixth and seventh.

At Penn, NorthWood competed in the boys swimming sectional with mixed results. Only one Panther, Andrew Whitehead, finished in the top six in any event at the meet. He placed fifth in the 100 backstroke with a time of :59.78

The sectional finals with take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Warsaw, Wawasee, Manchester and Valley will compete at Wawasee. NorthWood will compete at Penn.
