DUNLAP - The Wawasee boys cross country team met its goal when it placed third out of 10 teams at the Elkhart Central Regional competition to advance to the Manchester Semistate next week.
"Our goal was to finish in the top three and move on to the semistate, and we have done that," said Wawasee head coach Dave Stookey.
Rob Chalfant led the Warriors placing ninth overall with a time of 17:03.
Jeff Moerchen and Pete Melendez finished 21st and 28th respectively while Jerid Stoffel and Curtis Farrell placed 34th and 42nd to round out the Warrior top five.
Dustin Young and Curtis Shoemaker also competed for the Warriors.
"You can't single out anybody," said Stookey. "It really is a team victory.
"We have a good pack. Some of our top runners didn't run quite as fast, but our third and fifth men picked up the slack.
"This is one strength of this team. Someone always moves up if another falters a little. Everyone ends up contributing."
The Warriors are now looking forward to competing in the semistate competition at Manchester next week.
"This week we will probably taper a little more than we have been," said Stookey. "Not as much as we did for regional last year, but a little more than we did last week."
