SYRACUSE – Paige Miller was a double winner for the Lady Warriors, and Brady Robinson won twice for the Warriors as Wawasee won both the boys and girls divisions of its own invitational Saturday. The Lady Warriors outdistanced Rochester 365-260, while the boys team won 311-272 over runner-up South Bend St. Joseph. Miller took the 200 IM and 500 freestyle races. Shelby Adams won the 200 free, Mikala Mawhorter the 50 free, and Kayla Hershberger took the 100 backstroke. The Lady Warriors also won the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay. Robinson won gold in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke. Logan Brugh won the 500 freestyle. Both teams will resume Northern Lakes Conference competition Tuesday in Nappanee at NorthWood. Ponsler 5-0 in Merrillville Wawasee’s Tristin Ponsler went 5-0 in the tournament, while Ronny Shortt and Braxton Alexander went 4-1 for the day at the Tom Cameron Invitational in Merrillville Saturday. The Warrior team finished 1-4 in the meet, beating John Glenn and losing to Kankakee Valley, Hammond Morton, Harrison and South Bend Clay. “We will use today as a wake-up call to refocus and get back to the basics of wrestling, scoring one point at a time and being tough,” head coach Frank Bumgardner said. The Warriors will visit NLC foe Concord on Thursday.
Lady Warriors Edge SB Adams Wawasee made just seven field goals but went 23-26 from the free throw line in a 39-34 win over visiting South Bend Adams. Aubrey Schments and Kylee Rostochak each made all six of their free throws, while Kabrea Rostochak went 9-12 from the line for all of her team-high points. Next up for the Lady Warriors, now 3-7 on the season, is a game in Waterford Mills against Bethany Christian at 7 p.m. Tuesday. There will be no junior varsity contest.
