SYRACUSE - How you view Wawasee's golf team depends if you are an optimist or a pessimist.
The optimist says Wawasee is 6-0 - nothing wrong with that record.
The pessimist says Wawasee may be 6-0, but the team scores and the early-season schedule make that a misleading 6-0.
Wawasee golf coach Don Deck is a realist. While Wawasee upped its record to 6-0 with a 162-175 Monday win over Whitko (4-4) at South Shore Golf Course, he knows his team must start playing better this week - when the Northern Lakes Conference schedule kicks in.
"We played decent," he said. "Not excellent, just decent. We have been shooting in the low 160s and high 150s on our home course. But we better get ready to play that well away, because now we'll be away a lot."
There is nothing wrong with the top three golfers in Wawasee's lineup. Chad Wortinger and Ryan Skaggs tied for the best scores on the day, 38s. Lucas White shot a 41.
Carter Ploszek added a 45 and Bobby Likens a 49.
Levi Krider's 42 led Whitko. Mike Waybright shot a 43, Rob Wright a 45, Jordan Schrader a 45 and Drew Dial a 49.
For Deck, who is satisfied with his top three golfers, the goal is to get better scores out of the bottom of his lineup.
"We can get two or three playing well each match," he said, "but not four or five."
Wawasee entered the season with a No. 5 ranking, but Deck called a top five ranking "ambitious."
"I think we are still trying to put it all together," he said. "Our best score is 152.
We were just kind of mediocre again. We are in a tough conference. We had better start playing better than we have, or we will have some defeats."
