Warrior Golf Team Leads Roundup With Win At Northrop Invite

FORT WAYNE — The Wawasee boys golf team opened its 2014 season with a first-place finish at Saturday’s Fort Wayne Northrop Invitational. Competing with five other teams, Wawasee shot a 328 on the par-72 Colonial Oaks’ course, followed by Fort Wayne Canterbury’s 332 and Triton’s 336 to round out the top three. Whitko also competed at the invite, placing sixth with a 384. Cal Heinisch was Wawasee’s low score, shooting a 79, followed by Jeffrey Moore’s 80, Tristen Atwood’s 82, Rasmus Rich’s 87 and Mason Germonprez’s 94. Saturday in Franklin In a tournament with some of the top teams in the state, the 11th-ranked Warsaw boys golf team finished 11th at Saturday’s Spring Preview at Legends of Indiana Golf Club in Franklin. No. 4 Hamilton Southeastern won the event with a 298, followed by No. 2 Columbus North (312) and No. 3 Carmel (314) in second and third, respectively. On the par-72 course, Warsaw shot a 335, led by Jonny Hollar and Will Petro, who each shot an 80. The Warsaw Tigers host the Don Dicken Classic Saturday at Stonehenge Golf Club. BASEBALL Saturday in Garrett The Whitko baseball team kept its strong start to the season going Saturday at Garrett, sweeping a doubleheader. Improving to 8-1 on the year, Whitko dominated Game 1, winning 12-0 in six innings, then recorded a 10-8 victory in Game 2. In the opener, Ethan Nicodemus was strong on the mound, going all seven innings, allowing just three hits and zero runs, while Tanner Gaff went 3 for 4 at the plate. Zach Snep was the Game 2 winning pitcher, with Austin Sturgess going 2 for 4. Whitko is at West Noble today. SOFTBALL Saturday in Akron The Tippecanoe Valley softball team swept John Glenn in a home doubleheader Saturday, getting its second walkoff winner in a week. On Game 1, Valley and Glenn were tied 8-8 going into the seventh, but Katie Gunter broke that tie and gave Valley the 9-8 win, posting her third hit and third RBI of the game. In Game 2, Valley didn’t need the drama, winning 11-6, improving to 3-3 on the season. Up next for the Lady Vikings is Tuesday game at Culver Academies. GIRLS TENNIS Saturday in Warsaw The Warsaw girls tennis team finished fifth out of seven teams at its own tournament Saturday afternoon. No. 21 Penn won the tourney with 24 points, followed by No. 8 Munster (18) and No. 27 Fishers (17), while Warsaw tallied nine. Warsaw had four fourth-place finishes, including Sarah Boyle and Rachel Alexander at Nos. 1 and 3 singles, respectively. The No. 1 doubles team of Camille Kerlin and Abbi Baum were also fourth, as was the No. 2 doubles duo of Anna Hall and Athena Schlitt. BOYS TRACK AND FIELD Saturday in Fort Wayne The Wawasee boys track team finished fifth at Saturday’s Fort Wayne North Side Relays. Homestead took first place with 147 points, while Wawasee finished with 81. Individually, Jon Walker got a first-place finish for the Warriors in the discus with a distance of 136-2. Wawasee also had two second-place finishes, achieved by Kevin Carpenter in the pole vault (11-0) and Clayton Cook in the 110 hurdles (15.25).
