Walter A. Bowsher, 96, died Aug. 9, 2012, in Mountain Home, Ark.
He was born to Walter and Estella Bowsher. He married Doris Shilo, who died in May 1958.
He attended school in Leesburg. He spent three years in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Sill, Okla. He then enlisted in the U.S. Marines. He was on Wake Island when it surrendered to the Japanese and was a prisoner of war for 44 months. He went to California, where he still served in the U.S. Marines. He received many awards and two Purple Hearts. After retiring from the Marines, he served with the California State Police, retiring in 1985. He moved to Bull Shoals, Ark., in 1995.
He was buried in the National Cemetery at the Presidio of San Francisco with military honors.
