Posted
Nothing says summertime like a good fair.
From Wednesday to July 16, the Wagon Wheel Theatre will presents the Tony Award-winning Rodgers and Hammerstein classic “State Fair”.
It’s 1946. World War II is history. American optimism is sky high (especially in the heartland) and love is in the air. The Frake brood leaves behind the family farm and sets out on a much-needed vacation to the Iowa State Fair. Abel and Melissa hope to win a prized blue ribbon while young Wayne and Margy look for summer love.
The timeless soundtrack boasts hit songs such as “It’s a Grand Night for Singing” and “It Might as Well Be Spring.”
“State Fair” follows the monster success of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma!” and is based on the Phil Stong novel of the same name. “State Fair” debuted on the big screen in 1945 as a movie musical and was remade in 1962 starring Pat Boone, Bobby Darin and Ann-Margret.
The stage premiere of “State Fair” took place in 1969 at the St. Louis Municipal Opera presenting Ozzie and Harriet Nelson in lead roles. In 1996, more than 50 years after the original movie release, “State Fair” appeared on Broadway for the very first time.“State Fair” promises a fun-filled evening for the whole family. Adult tickets are $30 for all shows; tickets for students 13 through college are $16, and children 12 and under are $12. Special rates are available for groups of 15 or more.
