Voter Turnout Extremely Low

Posted

Only 19.31 percent of the registered Kosciusko County voters turned out Tuesday to choose who the candidates for county offices will be in the general election this fall.

That's less than 8,000 out of the approximate 40,000 registered voters.

In the 1998 general election, Kosciusko County voter turnout was around 43 percent.

In each precinct where people actually voted, the number of ballots cast compared to the number of registered voters ranged from a low of 11.12 percent in Turkey Creek Township, precinct 1, to a high of 45.63 percent in Franklin Township, precinct 2. Of course, Turkey Creek Township had 1,088 registered voters and only 121 voted, while Franklin had 263 registered voters and 120 actually voted.

And then there was Jefferson Township, which had no voters at all show up to the polling place, according to county clerk Marsha McSherry. There were 102 registered voters in that precinct. Not one voted.

Of those who did vote around the county, 1,093 were Democrats and 6,704 were Republicans. In the county, however, there was only one candidate who wasn't on the Republican ticket.

Those who did vote voted on candidates for county commissioners, at-large county councilmen, county clerk and several other county positions. They voted for the U.S. presidential candidates, senators, representatives and governor of Indiana.
