Virginia Mae Peterson Sand, age 94, passed away peacefully in Dallas, Texas, on June 22, 2025.
Virginia was born on March 31, 1931, in Fergus Falls, Minn., to Grace and Oscar Peterson, entering the world at the miraculous size of just 3lbs., 6 oz. — a tiny but determined spirit from the very beginning.
Virginia lived a long, full life, known for her feisty spirit, sharp wit, and tenacious heart. She had an endless love for her many cats over the years, especially her beloved Sammy, and found great comfort in her dog, Shadow. She found joy in the simple pleasures — curling up with a good book, working on puzzles, and enjoying conversation with her friends and family. She was also a masterful storyteller.
A devoted Catholic, Virginia’s faith was a constant source of strength throughout her life. Her upbringing in Minnesota was another source of pride for her, and she often spoke with love and admiration of her father, Oscar, whose memory she cherished deeply
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Grace and Oscar Peterson; her son, Daniel; and her husband, Ervin Sand. She is survived by her sister, Marion Ewert Bruno; her children: sons, Mark, Brian, John and Philip; daughters, Michelle Sand Baus and Melissa Sand. Her legacy continues through her 10 grandchildren and her 10 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense pride and joy.
In accordance with her wishes, Virginia will be cremated and laid to rest beside her beloved husband at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in St. Paul, Minn., on Tuesday, Aug. 12 at 1 p.m., after being remembered during three mass services at Sacred Heart Church in Warsaw on Saturday, July 5 at 5 p.m., and Sunday, July 6 at 8:15 a.m. and at 11 a.m. The final Mass will be held in Dallas, Texas, on Friday, Aug. 8 at noon at St. Thomas Aquinas Church. There will be a small reception at the home of her daughter, Michelle, following the Aug. 6 Mass.
She will be remembered for her quiet strength, kind heart, and the love she shared with everyone who knew her.
