AKRON - Tippecanoe Valley played host to the Knox Redskins Friday night, with the Vikings picking up a 74-60 win in what was a physical basketball game.
A total of 49 fouls were called, 27 of which were whistled on Knox. A technical foul also was called on coach Todd Boldry after the Redskins were called for seven straight fouls to start the third quarter.
Kevin Kindig left the game early in the first quarter when he was hit in the face. He was taken off the court with a bloddy nose.
"Both teams played very hard-nosed, physical basketball. When both teams play hard you will have lots of contact. There was a couple of calls that could have been made that would have gotten the game more under control," said Valley coach Bill Patrick.
Vikings Adam Nelson and Shane Salyer were called for three fouls each in the first half. Valley played most of the second half without Salyer.
"When we had Salyer sitting on the bench most of the second half, it hurt us a little offensively," said Patrick.
Kindig picked up the scoring slack in the second half when he scored 11 points in the final two quarters. Kindig led all scorers in the game with 20 points. He also added six rebounds.
"We had a good run in the second quarter offensively. We got hurt on the boards in the second and that kept Knox close," said Patrick, whose team improved to 3-0 on the season.
The Vikings pulled away in the third quarter when they outscored Knox 22-7. The Vikings led 54-32 after three quarters of play.
"The key to the game was when we held them to seven points in the third. Both teams played great defense," said Patrick.
Chad Hoffer added 17 points and four steals for Valley. Nelson and Sayler scored nine points each for Valley.
Ethan Combs led the Redskins with 15 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Jacob Cole scored 10 points and David Campbell added nine.
"Knox is a good team and they play very hard. I hope we get to play them in the holiday tournament this year," said Patrick.
The win improved Patrick's career coaching record to 626-215. Patrick is 148-35 in his ninth season with Vikings.
"I am proud of the way our kids played tonight. They played real hard. We did have a stretch there where we missed some free throws," said Patrick.
The Vikings are in action again Tuesday when they play at Class 3A No. 6 Plymouth.
