Vikings' Win Leads Prep Roundup

    ROCHESTER — Tippecanoe Valley’s Tyler Swain and Alex Thacker only scored three points between them in Thursday’s boys basketball game against NorthWood, but they certainly made them count.
    Swain, a sophomore, scored a bucket with 14 seconds left in the second overtime period, and Thacker, a freshman made 1 of 2 free throws with two seconds remaining in the second extra session as the Vikings beat the Panthers 70-68 in the first semifinal game of the Winning Edge Holiday Tournament at Rochester High School.
    The Vikings are now 5-2 on the season, while the Panthers fell to 2-4.
Rochester defeated Marquette Catholic 49-45 in the second semifinal game.
    Valley and the host Zebras will meet at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the championship game. The Vikings are looking for their first Winning Edge Holiday Tournament championship since 2004.
    NorthWood and Marquette Catholic will square off at 6 p.m. in the consolation contest.
    Scoring their fifth win in six games, the Vikings had four players score in double figures.
    Sophomore Tanner Andrews led Valley with 20 points, while junior Nick Kindig added 15 and senior Jeff Tillman and sophomore Robby Groom chipped in with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
    Johnathan Wilkinson led NorthWood with a game-high 21 points, while Braxton Miller added 19.
    The Panthers led 18-10 after one quarter of play, 24-17 at halftime and 35-31 at the end of the third quarter.
    The teams were tied at 52 at the end of regulation and at 59 after one overtime period.

Competing in the 10-team Carroll Shootout Thursday, the Wawasee boys basketball team began by defeating Fort Wayne Blackhawk 73-56 at Columbia City High School, but fell 51-37 to Carroll in its second game. With pool play completed, the tournament moves to Carroll High School today, with Wawasee facing Prairie Heights at noon, with their next game dependent upon that outcome. With a win over Prairie Heights, Wawasee would play in the 6 p.m. fifth-place game, but with a loss, the Warriors would play again at 4 p.m. for seventh place.

The Whitko boys basketball team advanced to today’s championship game of the Beef O’Brady’s/American Trust Holiday Classic with a 66-50 win over Peru Thursday at Peru High School. In the first game of the four-team tournament, Whitko’s Logan Irwin went for 34 points, while Trey Weber had 12. The 2-5 Wildcats face the 3-3 LaVille Lancers today at 8 p.m. back at Peru.
