Vikes, Squires Tie For TRC Tennis Title

MENTONE - Tippecanoe Valley and Manchester swept the first-place awards and split the TRC title on Saturday with 16 points each. Whitko came in third with 10 points and Rochester had eight points.

At No. 1 singles, Valley's Eric Love defeated the Squires' Nate Little, then Whitko's Justin Roman 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 for first place.

At No. 2 singles, Manchester's Chris Hemmig defeated Valley's Drew Shafer in the finals 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3.

At No. 3 singles, Manchester's Matt Purdy placed first, while the Squires' Derek Ring and Mark Gathany placed first at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles Valley's Aaron Martin and Brian Love took first place.

Manchester will host Wabash on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. Whitko will be at Central Noble today at 4:30 p.m. and Valley will be at Rochester today at 4:30 p.m.

Triton, Whitko, NorthWood At Valley Invitational

At Mentone, the Triton boys cross country team made a good showing on Saturday. The boys varsity team placed second out of 12 teams.

Whitko placed third in boys varsity, NorthWood placed fifth and Valley 12th. In girls varsity, NorthWood took second, while Valley placed fourth and Triton placed sixth.

Triton's Mason McIntyre took third overall with a time of 16:22. NorthWood's Aaron Hoover took fourth with a time of 16:27 and Daryl Nicodemus took 12th for Whitko. Valley's highest finish was Kevin Hileman in 54th.

In girls action, Brooke Tobias placed second overall for NorthWood with a time of 15:59. Triton's Shelly Miller finished fourth and Jenny Day placed eighth for Valley.

Valley will be at Rochester with Triton today at 4:30 p.m. Whitko will be at Southwood with Madison-Grant today at 4:30 p.m. NorthWood will be at Goshen with Wawasee today at 5 p.m.

Warsaw At Carmel Classic

At Carmel, the Warsaw boys cross country team placed seventh out of eight teams and the junior varsity team placed sixth out of six teams on Saturday.

David Hoffert placed 10th overall for Warsaw with a time of 16:50 as the only Warsaw runner in the top 25.

In girls action, Summer Boyd placed 23rd overall for the Tigers.

Warsaw will host Plymouth today at 5:30 p.m.

At Fort Wayne, the Wawasee boys team placed fifth out of 13, and the girls placed fourth out of 12 on Saturday.

Dusty Lytle and Jerid Stoffel both ran times of 17:17, while Pete Melendez and Jeff Moerchen ran 17:18 for the Warriors. The girls were led by Katie McCauley's time of 16:34.

Wawasee will run Tuesday at Goshen with NorthWood.

Manchester At Blackford

At Hartford City, Manchester's cross country teams competed in Saturday's Blackford Invitational.

Manchester's girls placed sixth out of 23 teams with a score of 231. West Noble won with 30, and Oak Hill was second with 73.

West Noble's Maria Harriman won the race with a time of 15:07. Manchester's Shay Knecht placed seventh with a time of 16:39.

The Manchester boys placed ninth out of 23 teams with a score of 283. West Noble won the race with 42.

Wabash's Kurtis George won the race with a time of 16:23. Jeremy Stacy was Manchester's top runner, placing 19th with a time of 17:50.

Manchester competes in the New Prairie Invitational on Saturday.

Triton Volleyball Invitational

At Bourbon, Triton and Wawasee both went 3-0 in pool play, before the Trojans defeated Wawasee 15-12, 2-15, 17-15 in the finals to capture the event.

Triton defeated Culver, LaVille and South Central to reach the championship, while Wawasee defeated John Glenn, Argos and Bremen to reach the finals.

Triton's Jena Weissert had 25 kills at the event and Heather Barron had 33 assists. Chris Scott added ten aces.

Triton (12-3) will be at Bethany Christian today.

NorthWood Wins Invitational

At Dunlap, NorthWood's volleyball team beat Mishawaka Marian 15-5, 15-12 to win Saturday's Concord Invitational.

NorthWood advanced to the championship through a tiebreaker situation. After pool play, NorthWood, Penn and Elkhart Memorial each had 2-1 records. NorthWood went to the championship because the Panthers had the least number of points scored against them in the previous three matches.

NorthWood beat Elkhart Memorial 15-9, 15-7, lost to Penn 15-3, 9-15, 15-6 and beat LaSalle 15-1, 15-6.

NorthWood, 12-2 overall and 2-0 in the NLC, hosts Bremen on Thursday.

Kelly Custer had six points and Heather Jones had three kills and 19 sets in a loss on Saturday.

In junior varsity action, Clinton defeated LCA 15-8, 15-9 despite seven points from Stephanie Shandis.

Lakeland Christian (3-6) will be at Argos on Tuesday.

Valley Takes 8th

At Lafayette, Tippecanoe Valley's volleyball team finished eighth out of 12 teams in Saturday's Lafayette Harrison Invitational.

The Vikings gave Lafayette Harrison everything it could handle. Last Saturday Harrison marched into Warsaw's Invitational and won it. Valley nearly knocked the same Harrison team off on its home court, losing 15-3, 13-15, 16-14.

"We played some of our best volleyball of the season," Valley coach Jon Parker said. "We were leading 14-12 in the last game. They got the side out then got four points in a row."

Despite losing that match, Valley continued to play well. The Vikings rolled over Gary West 15-2, 15-2 in their second match to finish second in their pool.

After that, Valley lost to Mount Vernon 15-12, 15-2 and lost to Twin Lakes 15-5, 15-3.

Valley, 5-9 overall and 1-0 in the Three Rivers Conference, is at LaVille on Tuesday.

Warsaw Invitational

Warsaw's boys soccer team won its first match by defeating NorthWood 6-0 in the consolation round of its Saturday invitational.

Carroll claimed the championship with a 4-1 win over Andrean.

In the first round, Andrean beat Warsaw 2-0, and Carroll beat NorthWood 4-1.

Phil Hood and Kyle Smith scored two goals each for the Tigers, while Gabe Koser and Rich Zentz added one each.

Warsaw, 1-5-1, hosts NorthWood at the CCAC on Tuesday.

At Syracuse, Wawasee's girls volleyball team fell to 1-6 with a Saturday loss to Goshen.

Wawasee is at DeKalb on Wednesday.

At Syracuse, Wawasee scored all five goals in the first half to beat Garrett on Saturday.

Sam Shipley scored two goals, while Alex Iounnau, Lucas Wampfler and Jon Olson added one each.

At Elkhart, Jeremy High returned an interception 33 yards for a touchdown and Adam Brown threw a 48 yard touchdown pass to Tony May as Wawasee won on Saturday.

Frank Dorales added a six-yard touchdown run and Shad Krull and Aaron Drumm each had an interception for the Warriors.

Wawasee (2-2) will host host NorthWood on Saturday.
