Veterans Day ceremonies were held throughout Kosciusko County over the weekend.

American Legion Post 49, Warsaw, held its ceremony at Center Lake Pavilion at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, followed by a dinner and entertainment at the post for the veterans. According to Don Creakbaum, past District 2 commander, there were approximately 150-200 people in attendance.

"It was really nice," said Creakbaum.

Guest speaker was Tom Henderson, a past department commander of the American Legion, from Valparaiso Post 49. The Kosciusko County Extension Choir presented special music under the direction of Dan Beam.

The posting of the colors was presented by a combined group of American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, AmVets and Auxiliary color guards.

At North Webster American Legion Post 253, a 30-foot by 50-foot flag was raised at 8:30 a.m. Sunday in the parking lot. Assisting with the flag-raising were the Winona Lake Fire Department and a crane from T-Square, North Webster. Approximately 35 to 40 people helped raise the flag.

Memorial services were held at Mock and Salem cemeteries and then at the post to "honor those who died at sea," according to administrative assistant Linda Land. Another ceremony was conducted by the post at the North Webster cemetery, followed by a dinner at the post.

The Pierceton American Legion Post kept its Veterans Day ceremonies "pretty laid-back," according to a spokesman. They held an open house and a lunch. A small ceremony was held at the post. At its peak, the spokesman said, they had approximately 70 people.

American Legion Post 223, Syracuse, held a ham-and-beans dinner for veterans today at noon.

Friday, the post presented a program at Syracuse Elementary School. The color guard presented the colors and there was a guest speaker. The fifth-grade choir sang patriotic songs.

Other programs honoring area veterans are scheduled for today in many county schools.
