Veterans Day

Editor, Times-Union:
In the observance of Veterans Day, I am reminded of the West Point motto: “Duty, Honor, Country.” The meaning of those three words is implied in the oath taken by every person who enters military service, whether active duty, National Guard or Reserves.
The oath, of course, has as much meaning for me today as the day I first swore it in 1955.
I would add two more words to the motto: “God” and “Family.” My motto interpretation, then, would be “God, Family, Duty, Honor, Country,” five simple words that embrace virtually every facet of human life, singularly, collectively or in any number.
Without faith of some kind, for example, I believe it is impossible for us humans to proceed through the trials and tribulations of life itself. Family can provide the rock-solid foundation needed to develop each of us from childhood into adults with the strong character required as citizens.
My admiration of our veterans, past and present, is without bounds. Saluting them is, for me, the easy part.
