Kudos to Lydia Neal for her Aug. 24 letter about adopting a World War II vet as well as other war vets.
Better late than never. As a World War II vet, I never saw or heard much for 50 years - from anybody. A little - until that World War II program at the Warsaw School gym a few years ago. That was nicely done - I was there.
Although I was overseas three years in the South Pacific, I never saw a Japanese. Shot at a few, but was always behind a big gun. Three years away from my family was the killer.
But what I often think about is the all-around knowledge (war and civilian) they hold in their minds. All seniors have been through a lot of life's trials and experiences. Talk to them kids (8 to 60 years)! Talk - ask!
When I was young, there were still a few Civil War vets and many World War I vets on the streets. I was probably too bashful to approach - a big mistake!
And now to politics. I'm for Senator O'Bama of Illinois, of course (as you know). He's young, new blood. I'm sure he's our man! His critics say that he lacks experience - ha! Bush, Nixon, etc. had experience, and they didn't turn out too good.
We do not want Mrs. Clinton and pretty boy in there to worry about, do we? No! No!
