A Warsaw woman collided her vehicle with a train at the intersection of Main and Hickory streets early Wednesday morning.
According to a Warsaw Police Department crash report, Yoko Saunders, 64, of 800 E. Arthur St., Warsaw, was westbound in her 2007 Toyota Camry on Main Street at 5:05 a.m. Wednesday.
As she approached the intersection with Lyon Street, a train was approaching from the south.
Saunders advised that she saw the flashing lights, but thought they were for the intersection at Main and Detroit streets. She also told police that her purse had fallen off the seat and she reached over to keep it from falling.
Saunders’ vehicle collided with the train engine as it was crossing the intersection. The train then pushed her vehicle into the support pole holding the flashing light for the crossing. The train continued for approximately 800 feet before coming to a stop.
Saunders declined medical treatment at the scene, but complained of left shoulder pain and pain to both legs.
Both the train and tracks are owned by Norfolk and Southern Railroad, Fort Wayne. There were 16 cars in the train, not including the engine.
There was approximately 400 feet from the point of impact to the rear of the train. The engineer advised that the train was traveling approximately 22 miles per hour at the time of the accident.
Damage was estimated at between $10,000 and $25,000.
