Valley Students Take ISTEP Day To Perform Community Service

Posted
With no ISTEP tests Tuesday, Tippecanoe Valley High School freshmen and some upperclassmen went out into area communities and performed community service.

Teacher Annette Chenoweth supervised freshmen at the Detroit Street Penguin Point. There, students washed cars and accepted donations for the family of Evelyn Bolen, 17, who died Sept. 2 in an accident at the high school.Besides car washes at both Penguin Point restaurant locations in Warsaw and at Lake City Bank in Mentone, Chenoweth said students also were volunteering at the Akron animal shelter, Mentone park, Combined Community Services, Winona Lake Park and Greenway and Miller's Merry Manor.

"We wanted to teach students about service and the service attitude," said Chenoweth.

She estimated 150 to 160 TVHS students were participating in the day's community service.

"It's fun to help people out," said Shelly Sabo, Mentone.

"It's nice to have an opportunity to help people out," agreed Jade Hall, Akron.

Kenneth Surface, Mentone, said, "I think it's good to help everyone out. It's good for the community, helping the Bolen family out with their loss."

Surface, Sabo and Hall all were washing cars at Penguin Point on Detroit Street.

At Miller's Merry Manor, students washed windows, pulled weeds and picked up trash. There were a lot of windows to wash and many weeds to pull to keep them busy.

This is the first year for the community service project at Valley, said Chenoweth. The entire freshman class is involved plus some upper classmen who did not have to take ISTEP.
