AKRON - An accident Sunday may have taken the life of a Tippecanoe Valley student, but through organ donation, he'll be helping others.
As of last he knew Monday night, Tippecanoe Valley High School Principal Kirk Doehrmann said senior Patrick Day, 18, Akron, had "not passed on" yet, but was on life support until his organs could be harvested. That was expected to happen either early Monday night or today.
The Tippecanoe Valley School Board held a moment of silence for Day Monday before beginning their school board meeting.
According to an officer with the Peru post of the Indiana State Police, Day was involved in a one-vehicle personal injury accident at 6:44 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Ind. 14 and Division Road, Fulton County. The accident allegedly occurred around 250 to 400 feet from Day's home. Day was flown to Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, where he was listed in critical condition Sunday, according to the ISP spokesman. Fulton County Sheriff's Department assisted the ISP at the scene. No further information was available from the ISP Monday night as the report was not finished, according to the ISP spokesperson.
However, a spokesperson at Parkview Hospital late Monday night said Day was not in their registry, but if Day's organs were to be donated, that could indicate possible brain death in such a case.
Day is the son of Joe and Marianne Day.
Doehrmann said grief counselors are available at the high school for students. Several rooms have been set up for students who need to talk. More information will be announced to the students as the school is informed.
