AKRON - A Tippecanoe Valley special needs student is dead after she was hit by a bicycle during a physical education class Tuesday afternoon.
Evelyn Bolen, 17, died at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne Wednesday evening.
According to a spokesperson with the Allen County Coroner's Office, Bolen's autopsy was taking place this morning. A cause and time of death were unavailable as of this morning.According to a press release sent out by Tippecanoe Valley School Superintendent Brett Boggs, Bolen, who is not named in the press release, was "accidentally struck by a bicycle driven by a classmate."
Boggs confirmed the bicycle belonged to a teacher, but he declined to comment on who the teacher was. Boggs also declined to comment on whether that teacher was in school today.
Bolen, who had Down Syndrome, was given CPR by school staff until EMS arrived.
The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department said inquires concerning the incident should be directed to Tippecanoe Valley School Corp.
According to Boggs' press release, counselors will be on-site to assist students and staff.
Bolen's funeral arrangements are pending with Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, Warsaw.
