MENTONE - The Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation's advertised tax rate for 1997 is down about 9 cents from the 1996 rate. The rate for Kosciusko and Fulton counties is 5.5159, based on an assessed valuation of $83,448,057, compared to the 1996 rate of 5.6121, with an assessed valuation of $75,719,230.
The total budget estimate for the general fund is $10,018,430. More than half of that amount will go for activities dealing directly with the teaching of pupils.
Superintendent Karen Boling said the rate difference in the general fund is due to the increase last year for the new facility levy. The corporation used the 1996 assessed valuation to figure the budget. Boling said that figure will probably go up at the tax hearing, resulting in a lower tax rate.
Only one community resident attended the public hearing Thursday. The budget will be adopted at 7 p.m. Aug. 29.
