Valley Sees Decrease In Enrollment, LEP Students

While student enrollment at Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. seems to be dropping, other figures in Valley's 2009 Annual Performance Report are increasing.

In 2006-07, Valley's student enrollment was 2,211. It dropped to 2,192 in 2007-08; 2,151 in 2008-09; and dropped again to 2,074 in 2009-2010.

Over the course of the past three years, total expenditure per pupil on a three-year average rose for Valley, but was below the state level. Valley's expenditure per pupil was $8,800 in 2006-07; $9,300 in 2007-08; and $9,800 in 2008-09. The state expenditure per pupil was $10,700.

The state teacher salary range minimum was $24,133, which is less than the minimum for Valley over the past three years. In 2006-07, the Valley minimum was $31,200; $31,980 in 2007-08; and $32,780 in 2008-09.

The yearly report also provides the teacher salary range maximum. While the state maximum was $84,686, the maximum for Valley in 2006-07 was $67,815; $69,510 in 2007-08; and $71,248 in 2008-09.

The percentage of students in special education at Valley schools has increased and surpassed the state result. The state percentage was 17.5, but in 2008-09 Valley had a percentage of 17.7 percent. That is an increase from 17.1 percent in 2007-08 and 16.9 percent in 2006-07.

Also on the rise at Valley is the percentage of students in gifted and talented education. In 2006-07, there were 10 percent of Valley students in gifted and talented. That increased to 14 percent in 2007-08 and 28 percent in 2008-09. Statewide, the percentage was 14.

Also surpassing the state average at Valley is the percent of students receiving free lunches and textbooks. In 2007-08, Valley had 44 percent of its students receiving free lunches and textbooks, up from 39 percent in 2006-07. In 2008-09, that increased to 46 percent. The state result is 44 percent.

The percentage of limited English proficiency students has decreased at Valley over the past three years. In 2006-07, there was 3.8 percent of LEP students. That dropped to 3.7 percent in 2007-08 and down to 2.7 percent in 2008-09. The state result is 4.2 percent.

Like the corporation's enrollment figures, the student enrollment at Tippecanoe Valley High School also has been dropping over the past four years.

In 2006-07, TVHS had a student enrollment of 718 students. That dropped to 707 in 2007-08; 683 in 2008-09; and 625 in 2009-10.

The SAT average score over the past three years has been below the state average score of 1003. In 2006-07, the average score was 913; was 997 in 2007-08; and dropped to 975 in 2008-09.

The number of high school seniors taking the SAT at TVHS has fluctuated. In 2006-07, it was 53; dropped to 47 in 2007-08; but increased in 2008-09 to 52. The state average is 49.

Valley's graduation rate has steadily increased over the past three years. In 2006-07, it was 68.1 percent; up to 71.9 percent in 2007-08; and 75.4 percent in 2008-09. The state average is 81.5 percent.

The attendance rate at TVHS has hovered around the same percentages for the past three years. The state average is 96.1. In 2006-07, Valley's attendance rate was 95 percent; up to 96.4 in 2007-08; but down to 94.4 in 2008-09.The number of students who have dropped out of school at TVHS has increased, but the number of students suspended or who have been expelled have declined.

In 2006-07, only 10 TVHS students dropped out. That jumped to 40 in 2007-08, but declined to 39 in 2008-09.

In 2006-07, there were 68 students suspended, but that dropped to 54 in 2007-08 and 53 in 2008-09.

While there were eight students expelled in 2006-07, TVHS had no students expelled in 2007-08 or 2008-09.

The number of expulsions and suspensions at TVHS involving drugs, weapons or alcohol was eight in 2006-07; four in 2007-08; and back up to nine in 2008-09.
