AKRON – Tippecanoe Valley Middle School concludes a food drive today for Mary & Jerry’s Helping Hands. If the school collects 3,000 items, the whole school will have an activities day Wednesday. The class with the most items collected by day’s end gets a pizza party. As of Thursday afternoon, history teacher and student council advisor Jeff Sprunger said the school collected about 1,400 items. Each day this week the food drive had a different theme for needed items. If students brought in certain items on certain days, their class got bonus points. Today is a free-for-all, Sprunger said, and students were expected to bring in the most items today. During their break periods, student council members went through the collected items to be counted, sorted and boxed. They also checked to make sure there was no expired food. On Tuesday, the student council will take the collection to Helping Hands’ food pantry and help deliver it. “It’s a good experience for them to see where the food goes. It’s more than just competitions,” Sprunger said.
