Valley Loses Star Basketball Player

MENTONE - Rumor became reality Monday when it was confirmed that Sam Wideman was no longer enrolled at Tippecanoe Valley High School. Monday was the first day of school for Valley students.

Wideman, a 5-11 junior, was expected to be a cornerstone of the Valley basketball program the next two years. She led the Vikings last season with 11 points and 7 rebounds a game as a sophomore.

"We'll verify that she moved," Valley athletic director Duane Burkhart said. "Other than that, we don't have any other comment."

Wideman transferred to Warsaw High School this summer. School began today at Warsaw, and athletic director Dave Fulkerson confirmed that Sam Wideman was enrolled there.

At Warsaw, if Wideman plays basketball as expected, she joins a potential powerhouse. Warsaw was led last year by sophomore twins Sherri and Tiffany Ross. Tiffany led the Warsaw area with 14 points a game, and she pulled down 8 boards a game. Sherri averaged 9 points, 3 steals and 2 assists a game.

Add Wideman to the mix, and Warsaw has the best junior trio in the area.

Wideman will also play volleyball, although her eligibility to play any sports is still in question right now. Fulkerson expected to receive the athletic transfer form Wednesday or Thursday. He would then send it on to the IHSAA.

Valley starters from last year who are expected to return include guard Tiffany Glingle, guard Kara Tucker and forward Andria Parker.
