AKRON — The Tippecanoe Valley boys basketball team rebounded from a Friday night loss to Northfield with a win over the Class 3A No. 9 Plymouth Pilgrims Saturday in Akron. Losing 40-34 Friday at Northfield, the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings got right back on the court Saturday against the Pilgrims (6-3), getting a 54-43 victory, improving to 7-3 on the year. Leading 27-24 going into the final quarter, Valley matched its point total from the previous three quarters by making five field goals and converting 17 of 21 free throws in the frame. Valley junior Nick Kindig made all nine of his fourth-quarter free throw opportunities, going 13 of 13 overall, finishing the game with 29 points, while sophomore Tanner Andrews finished the game with 19 points, making 7 of 8 free throws. The Vikings are back in action Tuesday at Argos. Whitko senior Logan Irwin kept his big season going Saturday at Class 3A No. 4 Lebanon, but his team came out on the losing end, 72-62. Playing a game that was originally slated to be played at Purdue University before NCAA rules prohibited it a month ago, Irwin made 12 of 24 field goals to score 35 points, while also posting five assists and five rebounds. Teammate Gabe Powell had 12 and seven rebounds. The loss snapped Whitko’s three-game winning streak, but the Wildcats will look to get another one going Friday at Southwood in a Three Rivers Conference matchup. In Saturday’s 134-49 Northern Lakes Conference win at Concord, the Warsaw boys swim team won 10 of the 12 events, with Jayden Parrett, Spencer Davidson and Dominick Cesaretti all being a part of four wins. At Manchester, the Tippecanoe Valley boys swim team claimed a 91-88 road win Saturday. In the team win, Valley was led by Kenneth Surface’s wins in the 200 IM and 100 breast, while joining Brandon Maull, Tommy Alexander and Brody Cook on the winning 200 medley relay and 400 free relay. For Manchester, the Squires won three events, including the 200 free relay of Kegan McNeeley, Brodi Carter, Calvin Barnett and Ross Messer. Valley is back in competition Tuesday at home against Rochester, while Manchester’s next meet is Jan. 18 at home against Oregon-Davis.
The Wawasee boys swim team won four events Saturday at home, but fell 106-80 to Goshen in Northern Lakes Conference action. In the team loss, Wawasee did get wins from Zac Hershberger (200 IM, 100 breast), Luke Smith (100 free) and the 200 free relay of Sebastian List, Smith, Andrew Busse and Hershberger.
