Valley Board Hears Update On Akron Elementary Project

AKRON – During the Tippecanoe Valley School Board meeting Monday, the board heard an update on the Akron Elementary School additions and renovations.
Chris Muvceski, Skillman Corp, project manager, said in the last month site demolition has been completed as well as the north existing demolition on the structure. The interior abatement has been completed, and excavation of the gymnasium and cafeteria has started.
Work planned for the next four weeks includes completing pouring foundations at the gymnasium and cafeteria, continuing to prepare the site for the courtyard and north wing classrooms, the foundation will be poured for the north wing classrooms, concrete masonry will begin for the cafeteria and gym and preparation for the administration offices will begin.
Muvceski said unsuitable soils were replaced with new soil and the cost was $156,000.
Brett Boggs, Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. superintendent, said work on the project began in May, and the project will be completed in December 2017.
The school board last night also recognized several staff members with awards.
Pillar Awards For Outstanding Support Staff were presented to Cheryl Simons, Tippecanoe Valley Middle School athletic and attendance secretary, and Lyle Butt, Tippecanoe Valley High School head bus mechanic.
Simons is a veteran staff member at TVSC who started in 1985 as an instructional assistant at Akron Elementary School. She also operated the concession stand at TVMS for the last 28 years.
Butt has been a part of TVSC for 20-1/2 years, where he has been fixing buses in the bus garage and also has served as the director of transportation.
The World Class Teacher Award was presented to Micah Lukens, Burket Educational Center, alternative education program teacher.
Lukens grew up on his family’s farm very close to TVHS and has been a part of 284 students’ lives who have gone on to graduate from high school.
Wayne Landis was recognized for his retirement as the TVMS seventh- and eighth-grade mathematics teacher. Landis completed a 30-year career in education at TVMS.
New hires approved Monday included: Maria Quintana-Baca, TVMS custodian; Linda Penrod, TVHS custodian; Angela Parson, Akron Elementary second-grade teacher; Greg Prater, TVHS freshman football coach; Tim Meyer, TVHS custodian; Veronica Bahena, Mentone Elementary custodian; Cassandra Jensen, TVHS director of marketing, public relations and grant writing; and Brendan Marsillett, TVHS technology associate.
The resignations of Tonya Randall, Mentone Elementary custodian, and Erin Kintzel, TVMS cheer coach were accepted.
The termination of Angela Gast, TVHS bus driver, was approved.
The board approved a facility use contract with Beaver Dam Preschool and a real estate lease with Kosciusko County Head Start, Cardinal Services.
The board also approved a $5,078 Dekko Foundation grant for Akron Elementary to create work spaces in the library.
