Healthcare, the war and government spending were some of the topics addressed Thursday by Democrat U.S. Congress 3rd District candidate Michael Montagano.
Montagano, 26, Bristol, met with approximately 30 Kosciusko County residents, business leaders and the Kosciusko County Democrat party at Miner Lemon & Walston, Warsaw. The U.S Congressman 3rd District seat currently is held by Mark Souder.
"I am running to support Hoosiers of all walks of life who are calling for change and a new generation of leadership," Montagano said.
Kosciusko County was one of his stops in his eight-county tour.
He visited DeKalb and LaGrange counties this week. He met with business and farm owners, listening to their concerns.
Montagano will be in Fort Wayne Monday at the Embassy Theatre to make his announcement to run. He also will visit Goshen.
"I believe we are in a crossroads as a state where 80 percent of the state believes we are headed in the wrong direction," Montagano said.
"We have a choice to decide which local representatives we send to Washington to represent us, and we have a decision to seek decline or go in the direction of change," Montagano said.
He said if he is elected he will work to bring troops home.
"We have spread our troops thin in Iraq, and we need to do what is best for our nation and protect our borders," Montagano said.
He also said if he is elected he will fight for healthcare for all Hoosiers and ensure students who cannot afford to attend college have the opportunity to attend.
He said tax dollars should be spent wisely and reckless government spending should end.
"Politicians often put their interests before the people and that needs to change," he said.
Before pursuing the campaign full time, Montagano was an attorney with law firm Stuart & Branigin, specializing in higher education law.
He was a 2005 recipient of the American Bar Association Award of Recognition for Excellence in Local Government and Land Use Law.
