WINONA LAKE - The Lakeland Community Concert Association presents the Uptown Lowdown Jazz Band Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Rodeheaver Auditorium.
From Seattle, the group formed in 1971 and specializes in upbeat Dixieland and ragtime music. Whether it's the very familiar and beloved music of W.C. Handy, Jelly Roll Morton or Duke Ellington or the diamonds in the rough of lesser known composers, every note is played with skill, style and verve. While the Uptown Lowdown Jazz band plays traditional jazz, it features a non-traditional mix of instruments. With the usual cornet, trombone and tuba, the band is rounded out by piano, banjo and two stellar reed players who rotate from clarinet to soprano, alto and bass saxophone.
Members are Bert Barr, trumpet player; Tom Jacobus on trombone; Paul Woltz and John Goodrich, reeds; Rose Marie Barr, piano; Art Horgen, tuba; and Al LaTourette, banjo.
The Uptown Lowdown Jazz band has played many concerts and at many jazz festivals across the country. They also have performed at the opening of the Kingdome in Seattle, at 6 a.m. as wake-up music for sales meetings, cruises on Puget Sound, weddings and many other functions, large and small.
While great, smile-inspiring music is the foundation of the band, they enjoy a warm, fun-loving and outgoing stage presence which delights every audience. And, of course, all of the players are fine musicians who can hit every planned note, as well as the improvised ones, with perfection.
The LCCA concert season closer is April 27 when the gold medalist of the 2006 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis appears along with Yingdi Sun, gold medalist of the 2005 Liszt Competition.
Children, 18-years-old and younger or still in high school may attend free when accompanied by an adult member.
Individual tickets are available for $15 each.
LCCA subscription cards are honored at community concerts in four other towns: Kendallville, LaPorte, Auburn and Kokomo. Reciprocal schedules are available.
