Updated: IDEM Reports Leak In Leesburg

LEESBURG – The Kosciusko County Health Department has reported an underground leak at the site of the Freedom Express in Leesburg.
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management was notified Tuesday of “the discovery of released regulated substances at an underground storage tank site or in the surrounding area... or a spill or overfill” at the Freedom Express on Ind. 15 in Leesburg, according to the Wednesday health department release.
The gas station was demolished earlier in the summer and the former Farmer’s State Bank building moved to make way for the construction of a new, larger Freedom Express on Ind. 15.
An environmental consulting firm made the report to IDEM, according to department administrative assistant Sherry Jordan this morning. She said the firm reported that the concentration of ground contaminants found during removal of underground gasoline storage tanks was below IDEM remediation levels and that no lead was detected in nearby water.
Jordan said IDEM will review the environmental firm's report and decide whether to deactivate the site or issue an order that no further action is needed.
