United Water Indiana received approval Wednesday from the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission for a 17 percent rate increase.
According to Lester Melton, general manager of United Water, the new rate would take effect with the July 15 billing cycle and will raise the average water bill approximately $3.35 per month.
"Over the last four years, United Water has spent close to $2.1 million to expand and upgrade our water treatment facilities in Warsaw to improve water quality and service to our customers," Melton said. "The increase in rates for water service is directly related to these improvements."
He added the upgrades are primarily the result of increased drinking water standards mandated by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.
He said future rate increases will depend on any additional IDEM standards imposed and increased demand for service, but that United's corporate policy is to use all available capital funds on hand first, before seeking a rate increase.
