Unions Good

Editor, Times-Union:

Miss Arnold, I really don't think the union thugs, as you call them, are the problem with towns like Detroit and Pittsburgh. As you might recall, we had a president that opened up the free trade and away went our steel mills. Then we had a recession and it crippled the auto industry.

I hate to see that you support Kubacki and Wolkins. If my information is correct, Mrs. Kubacki's husband is the CEO and president of one of our local banks and knocked down a little over $700,000 last year alone. I don't think Mr. Hooker came close to that amount of money even with overtime. Now you and I and all who pay taxes pad Mrs. Kubacki's pockets while her hubby is racking in a mint. Come on here, who needs to take a pay cut?

As for Wolkins, he should have been sent to the curb long ago.

Let me give you another good one. A local company's CEO just got his pay cut from what he made last year. I don't know how the poor dude will get by cause they dropped his pay 9 percent. I believe it was from 25.6 million a year down to a lowly 23.2 million a year.

Now let's say we took his salary per year and gave it to some companies around here. Yep, I bet they could do some more hiring. Actually, I bet DePuy could do some hiring and maybe even build on. So you see the average American union worker's wages don't come close to the politicians or the the big wheels that run the show. Also the five or six weeks of vacation here in the state actually is on the short end of the straw compared to other countries. We actually work more hours than anyone except maybe the 16-cent-a-day sweatshops.

So in that regard, the union shops are really nice. I'll put it this way: I've worked in shops for peanuts and been treated like dirt. I worked in the non-union place that is now laying off workers with 20 or more years of loyal service. I now work in that union shop and damn glad and proud that I do. Actually, Miss Arnold, I thank God everyday for it.

So for me I'll keep God and my union both. Have a nice day.
