Union Explores Options In Kroger Closing

The United Food and Commercial Workers Local 700, which represents the workers of the Warsaw Kroger store, won't give up easily.

According to Jim Preddy, executive assistant to Local 700 President Jim Jacob, the union is investigating all their options before moving forward, but the organization will move forward.

"There's a number of options we have," Preddy said. "And seeking an injunction (to prevent the closing) is an option."

Preddy said the union is also considering picketing the Owens stores and conducting protest rallies to publicly show its displeasure over the decision to close the store.

Preddy said the union believes Kroger violated its contract with the local when it notified them Aug. 14 of the closing of the Warsaw store, then notified them Aug. 27 of the purchase of Owens grocery store chain, which will remain non-union. The second announcement gave an Owens purchase date as Aug. 10, Preddy said.

"Their intentions were clear," he added.

Another grievance the union has with Kroger is that employees offered transfers to Fort Wayne or South Bend are being forced to drive extended distances with no additional compensation.
